Learning tabla, or any other classical instrument for that matter is as much about the theory as much as it is about the practical stuff. Nobody can expect to be a true musician without diving deep into the theoretical concepts that form the basis of Hindustani Classical Music.

In chronological order, these are the articles you need to follow:

• Introduction to Hindustani Classical Music:
  This should logically be the first article you should go through if you plan to learn tabla. It discusses the basic terms – Swara, Raga and Taals – and their significance.
• Basic terms in taals and tabla:
  All the terms including matras, bols, taali, khaali etc.
• Basic bols on tabla:
  All the basic bols which form taals and their various compositions.
• Laya and Layakari: Laya (tempo) is the basis of music. Go through this article to learn about laya and layakari.
• Compositions in tabla:
  Go through this to know about all the various compositions that are played on the tabla. These include kaidas, tukras etc.
